Russia anticipates peace deal between Baku and Yerevan - Ambassador

Russia is hopeful that Azerbaijan and Armenia will soon finalize a peace treaty, marking a crucial step toward lasting peace in the South Caucasus.

Russian Ambassador to Baku, Mikhail Yevdokimov, expressed this optimism, noting that recent official statements indicate the draft peace treaty is nearly complete, AzVision.az reports citing the Russian media.

On June 27, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry handed over the eleventh package of proposals for a peace agreement to Armenia.

Before Yevdokimov's remarks, in July 2024, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman Aykhan Hajizada reaffirmed Azerbaijan's commitment to ongoing negotiations with Armenia. Hajizada confirmed that Azerbaijan is open to holding talks in Russia or through other diplomatic channels, highlighting the country’s readiness for further discussions. Azerbaijan remains receptive to engaging in dialogue, whether hosted by Russia or through alternative diplomatic avenues.

In support of these efforts, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated on July 24 that Russia stands ready to facilitate the negotiations, ensuring favourable conditions for the discussions.

The most recent meeting between Azerbaijani and Armenian officials occurred in Moscow on May 19, 2023. Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan met at the invitation of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The discussions centred on implementing previous trilateral agreements and advancing the draft treaty titled “On Peace and Establishment of Interstate Relations.”

Both ministers appreciated Russia's role in organizing the negotiations and agreed to continue the dialogue.
